Terms such as "sustainable" and "environmentally friendly" are now so widely used that it is often forgotten how recently our attitudes towards the world has changed and in 1845, when Nestor Martin opened his iron casting foundry, industrial pollution was considered by many to be evidence of purpose and productivity rather than the mismanagement of our resources. Nestor Martin was a man who believed that because the fundamentals of engineering were based on the laws of nature all engineering should be in sympathy with nature. His ambition to build stoves of extreme efficiency was not just a desire to demonstrate his technical expertise, it was his commitment to wanting control of the natural phenomenon of fire without disturbing the cycle in which nature dismantles and recreates. His commitment went beyond the stoves themselves, his foundry was built deep in the forests of the Ardennes , which provided a sustainable fuel supply of wood for the foundry's furnaces.
